I think it's wise to keep all the PD related questions in a single thread. So yeah, use this one.
Personally, I wonder if anyone can tell me what all the options are in the preferences. With one of the last releases, the entire menu was overhauled and is now tabbed into 3 portions.
My guess is:
-the speed/port/autoupdate tab
-something with cache(unity)/speed management
-unity size, sign(nickname), folders and some button for the mutagen(customize) settings. No clue what it does.
Is there a new location to download PD? I can only find .993 that won't connect or update.

Your setup must be incorrect, .993 connects and updates shortly (XP SP2). Ignore the fact that nodes doesn't appear after pasting them into window and hitting 'add', simply continue.
If you're running other P2P/data upload programs, they may have your upload bandwidth maxed out. PD will NOT connect if it does not find enough free upload bandwidth... so these are your choices:
1) Buy faster broadband (if you can find...)
2) Set a lower upload speed in your other P2P programs (if they allow to do so)
3) If you can't lower your upload speed in your other programs, then you will need to close them when you want to use PD. Sounds awful, but you must understand that there is no unlimited bandwidth.
If you plan to run Share and PD with a DSL with a 512Kb upload AT THE SAME TIME... you're pretty out of luck :(
Or install Netlimiter (2.10 because older versions have problem with PD->CPU 100%) and keep the upload at 20KB/s(globally).It's important to have a slow latence for connect to a japanese host,otherwise you have a lot of time out.

My unity folder is stuck at 12MB, yet my total send is 2.6 gigs and total receive is 2.8 gigs, what the hell is it doing sending all that information yet it's not growing? I have had 10 files set to DL but it says they're sleeping for the past 2 days, is this related the unity thing? Cause I think it said I needed 2000MB unity folder first...

■DLが始まらない幾つかの原因について
①：接続回線の種類を間違えて設定している場合は、接続が頻繁に切れる為まともにDL出来ません。
つまり、接続回線の詐称には何の旨味もありません。接続回線の種類を正しく設定し直して下さい。
②：接続要求が多くて順番待ちの状態になっている場合は、暫くDLが始まりません。

③：ネットワーク上に実身を持っているノードが接続していない場合は、暫くDLが始まりません。
実身を持っているノードが接続してくるまで気長に待ちましょう。
④：ネットワーク上の完全な実身が何らかの理由で既に消滅していて仮身だけが在る場合（仮身の寿命は、実身が消えてから3日経過するまで）、
幾ら待ってもDLできません。再放流を依頼するか諦めて下さい。
⑤：Unity（キャッシュ）が満タンの状態と空きがある（スッカラカン）状態では、通信量もDLの落ちて来易さも全然違います。
自動DL（dht）分の2GBがなかなか溜まらず、ファイルをDLできない場合は最低でも2GB分のファイルをULして下さい。
又、すぐにでも最適な稼働状態にしたい場合は、最大Unity設定値の半分までファイルをULして下さい。
※自動DL（dht）分の2GBは、Unity用の最低40GBに含まれます。
※自動DL（dht）分の2GBが溜まるとPDの動作が、自動DL（dht分）優先から手動DL優先に切り替ります。
普通に稼働してる様に見え始めるのは、最大Unity設定値の半分【dht＋du分（自動DL分を含む）】が溜まってからです。
つまり、Unity即消しには何の旨味もありません。自分のDL効率を下げているだけです。
またDLし易くする為に、故意に「捏造・キーワード間違い・アフィリエイト・ウイルス」等のファイルを流し続けると、
あなたの仮身は各ノードに無視登録されるか有害評価を受け、以後のファイルをなかなかDLしてもらえないという状況に陥ります。
⑥：①～⑤を試しても症状が改善されない場合は、PD本体のバグの可能性が有ります。
ボードの『perfect dark 総合ボード』にテンプレを使用して詳細なバグ報告を書き込んで下さい。
※ADSL1.5M以下の回線を利用されている方は、回線速度が遅いためになかなか自動DL（dht）分の2GBが溜まらない場合があります。
その場合は、一時的に自動DL（dht）分の2GBが溜まるまで回線速度設定をADSL4Mに変更して下さい。
自動DL（dht）分の2GBが溜まった後は、①の理由により回線速度設定を元の正しい設定に戻して下さい。
I recently changed computers and copied my PD and unity folders (latter was 27GB) to my new computer. For some reason, PD refuses to go online now no matter what folder I assign as the unity folder. I can only get it to work by deleting perfect dark.sekai. Is there any way to get it to use the old unity folder? How should I have migrated the program?

My PD cache didn't growed at all... until i fed it with some gigs of older Share downloads. You can grow your cache fast: simply upload some delicious files, and you're done. As a side bonus, you help the network to grow, migrating the content from Share/Winny/<put your favorite network here> to PD's mass storage darknet.
It's dead simple. A single DVD ISO or a bunch of episodies of a series will do the job. But please, don't cheat by uploading crap or bogus/dummy/fake files! (anyway, the network will reject them eventually, with the content rating system)
and do not use netlimiter because perfect dark limits download too! this is ownage.
I can not get PD to connect. I have added all the new nodes at that site and the port is open but it just says "Perfect Dark is offline"

Perfect Dark will NOT connect if you don't have enough free upload bandwidth. From my experiments, it requires, at the very least, 5KB/s of upload to start up. If you're running other P2Ps at the same time, hogging your upload, PD will refuse to connect.
As for the connection attempts, i'm not totally clear on this, but if you look at the stats on "Information" tab, you will see a line called "sekai". "Sekai" seems to be PD's node database. It's stored in a file called "perfect dark.sekai" (something like Share's "nodes.db" or Kad "nodes.dat"). In that stat line, check the two last numbers at the end (looks like a fraction, like "2/190" or something like that): the last number seems to be the number of connection attempts. The number just before it seems to be the number of sucessful conections, If it's zero, PD is "offline". If it's between 1 and 5, it's on "firewalled" status, and if it's 5 or higher, you're properly connected, open for uploads and downloads.
Anyone can explain exactly that sekai info line?
Is there a way to make search hits go over 1000 like Share? Share could get a ton of hits for one keyword (3000+ for example).

On topic: Have you set a unity size limit into Options? If you leave that blank, unity will grow until filling your HD. Since you have lots and lots of HD, go and enter a reasonable size limit, then PD should free all the space past the unity size limit.

For some reason all the search results are in really small font. It's extremely hard to read unless I select it and it appears up top with the full file name. All the menus and everything else are regular sized font. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Port number is pretty important, depending on if you have a firewall up. I saw from the pics that you're downloading and uploading at a speed that's indicative of an open port, so your port number is fine.
As far as I know, what your port number is doesn't determine anything to do with download time. it's just the speed you send and receive data.
Your bandwidth limit should be set to whatever you feel like downloading or uploading at. If you never reach that limit you can lower it.
From what I understand forty gigs of unity is the minimum, and they say you need at least twenty gigs if you want any efficiency for your downloads. Otherwise just keep it running and you will eventually download, depending on how common the file is.
Like someone earlier posted before, Perfect Dark is still pretty new and still in testing.
I'm a bit used to amule, so I'm a bit worried about what I can do.
1) Yes, because a copy of the downloaded file is already in your unity (cache). Same for Share.
2) Yes, because, as per 1), nothing in the download folder is shared. In these apps, the download folder is private. Also, on Perfect Dark, each file that you would like to release must be UPLOADED BY HAND (unlike Share that seeds everything that you have in your public folders). The only way to flood PD network with junk is... uploading the junk by hand ;) Not useful for spammers, so it's a nice feature.
Even though I sort my results by time, frequently things are added as if older, making it really hard to keep track of new releases. Is there a way to fix this?

If you upload any files, they are first transferred to your unity before being uploaded to the network. The only way uploading files won't increase your unity is if the file is already in your unity.
Is it possible to simply move the unity folder to another partition?

As far as I know there is no way to get more results.
However, you can work around that using the advanced search.
Most useful is setting the filesize. In fact you can kind of cheat and get as many results as you want. All you have to do is create advanced searches with different file size ranges. Although that's probably unnecessary since depending on what you're looking for you'll know how big it is and can just set generous lower and/or upper limits.
Or you can use the ~ (NOT) operator in your searches. For example if you're looking for an iso, you can add ~mp3 ~avi and so on and those results won't be shown. I haven't used this much yet since just setting a 50mb or so lower limit (depending on what I'm looking for) is enough to weed out enough unwanted results.

Now i'm starting to experience a weird problem with my PD setup: it's now claiming that i don't have a 2000MB unity! (i receive the message that "PD needs to download unity, blah, blah"). Yet my unity folder is at 2828MB!!!
The problem started yesterday after having PD running for a while, suddenly the message appeared, and it now popups each time that i run PD, like a fresh install... It still downloads stuff (although it's quite slow, but that's normal here).
Any suggestions?
If it still works, I wouldn't really worry. Otherwise try clearing your unity, or reinstalling PD.

I have PD running 24/7, I have plenty of HD space and idle bandwidth (PD is configured to use up to 100 kB/s with no transfer limits)
How does the ignore list work exactly?
I'm trying to use it to keep track of the search list by marking everything I have already seen, because new items tend to pop up anywhere.
But some items don't get their tag changed the first time, and when I tag them again they disappear from the list entirely.
Are you talking about the "ignore words" in the flow view?
If yes, FORGET IT. This is only for filtering spam/undesired messages from the "flow". Useful if you ever see any chinese scumbag trying to sell V1a6ra or other crap. It will NOT WORK for filtering search results.

Well after trying it out for a while, I think the odd behavior was from duplicates or entries swapping places.
Furthermore you can hide download&complete in search view, which is important because ignoring messes up reviews. The only downside I can think of is if this inappropriately gives the item a lower score. Unless I find out that it does I will keep using it.
I'm having a strange problem with Perfect Dark. My unity size seems to be stuck at 18MB regardless of how much it downloads. I have plenty of hard drive space and the program is constantly downloading. For example I restarted it a few minutes ago and so far it has received 205MB and sent 154MB, but the unity stays at 18MB. Anyone have any idea what's wrong?

I haven't used perfect dark for about a month or 2, and I wanted to boot it up recently but now its refusing to connect to the PD network. My unity folder is 160gb, my port is open, I have the latest nodes and plenty of HDD space. Before I stopped using PD I was able to get 1mb/sec of transfers. Now it every time I boot it up total send and total receive gets to about 1kb each and if left on sekai goes to be 1/40,000+.

Crap ISP? Some ISPs block some ports. Try picking another one. Also, sometimes, you need to restart PD after changing the port (otherwise it will stay in "firewalled" mode). Did you have done it?

You don't need to upload 2GB, just upload SOMETHING!
Share at least a single but delicious file (300MB will be enough), and wait a litte. Recently i started from scratch with a new PD setup, and added a bunch of files to download. As expected, it didn't downloaded nothing... but as soon as i shared a new file into the network, BOOM! Downloads skyrocketed :)
Ah, having a GOOD upload speed (say, anything better than 25KB/s) helps A LOT ;) Don't expect results with a 10KB/s upload, even if you share a truckload of files. PD punishes low upload speeds, unfortunately.

Curently I'm looking for the explanation of the "partial download" option when you right-click a downloading file.
Tried with Google, and it seems that it's another info-site, like P2P-DB.NET. It has tutorials on how-to get started with the programs, node lists, and talks about another app called Cabos (yet another Gnutella client... this network REFUSES to dead, despite being almost useless today for anything except pr0n).
There is a PD manual somewhere in the network (it's a HTML Help file, .CHM). but it was for a old PD version. I will recheck it to see what's interesting, and if can i find something interesting there...
I stopped using Share (my ISP capped my upload from 512K to 128K), and while PD works here, it's barely usable, due to the aftermentioned bandwidth issue. However, i now have access to another 512K-upload line... and PD works like a champ there :P

Huh? My unity and upload was 2GB in the pic. Now I have 4G unity and 3G upload with an upload bandwidth limit of 180kB/s but my downloads are still not moving for hours while others with comparable unities download them with no probs. Only from time to time a few MB make it my way :(

Well, the luck what we have on those downloads are hit-or-miss... For example, you may have a bunch of files from the same lot, and while most of them will download quickly, there always will be one or two that will stall for a looong while. I have experienced that quite a few times...
And what's even more weird? Such "stalled files" may download fine from another node :) Tell your friends about PD, let them download, and wait and see what happens...

Some notes about PD network connection and usage:
FYI: "sekai" meaning:

So, "sekai" in PD is your "access point" to the world, in this case, the nodes that link you to that huge stash of files and boards :)
sekai: 0 + xxx + yyy(zzz), aaa / bbb
Where:
0: always zero?
xxx: Unknown...
yyy: Total nodes in sekai (database)
zzz: Unknown....
aaa: Total of successful connections
bbb: Total of failed connection attempts
If aaa = 0, you're not connected at all. Even if aaa > 0, you can still be firewalled. And if aaa stays at zero, and bbb keeps growing, you're either firewalled, have a obsolete node DB, or have a really shitty upload speed :(
Fortunately for you, shitty LV replica handbag scams haven't hit PD boards/flow yet :P

My PD is suddenly complaining about open ports.
It's still using the same port (27712) and I have opened this with iptables, and that has always worked in the past. Just this morning I looked at it (it has been running for weeks) and it suddenly can't find anything.
I verified with online port scanners that the port is open, and with netstat that perfect dark is using it.
Restarting and removing the current sekai file didn't help.
Here >>93, I changed the port, and then I opened that one too, and now it works again. Maybe something was blocking the port on the way to the PD network.
A new version appears to have been released. Anyone got a list of changes?
SUMMARY:
1) The GUI is now multithreaded... so it should run smoother :)
2) Networking core has a LOT of improvements... let's hope that this leads to faster downloads and less wasted bandwidth...
3) Boards are now a bit more reliable (some posts used to get lost somewhere in the way...)
4) At the end of the changelog, "Kaicho" is saying that the goals of PD are changing... from being the best anonymous P2P ever made to... something more? But at the end he says that nothing has changed :?

大変長い間お待たせしてしまって申し訳ありません。
久しぶりのアップデートなのですが、この一年間ほとんどコードは弄っていません。
書くほどの変更点もありません。
今回は挨拶とアップデートのテストが目的です。
これからの perfect dark について、項目別に書いてみました。
元々 perfect dark はコアの部分とGUIの部分を分けるように設計されていました。
いましたが、開発を急ぐあまりコアとGUIの部分が曖昧になり、
マルチスレッドとGUIの問題も手伝って、今では完全にごっちゃになってしまっています。

2. 大規模ネットワークへの対応について
現在、ネットワークがどのくらいの規模になっているかわかりませんが、
数万台の規模になると現在の実装では徐々に効率が落ちていくと思います。
perfect dark は元々数十万台規模のネットワークを視野に入れて設計しています。
今後はネットワークの状態を見て、こちらの実装にも手を付けていきます。
3. データ分散について
現在の実装では、データ（実身）は完全キャッシュのみ保持しています。
perfect dark の初期は、データ（実身）を分割して保持していましたが、
歯抜けが多く効率が低下してしまうため、現在の実装に落ち着いています。
冗長化を施した上でデータを分散するという意見も出ましたが、実装が難しいため以前は見送りました。
ですが、perfect dark の開発が進みネットワークの理解が深まるにつれて、
実装は可能だろうと今は思っています。
冗長化を施したデータ分散では、例えば一つのデータを10個のデータに分割します。
10個のデータから5個のチェック用のデータを作成し、15個のデータを用意します。
15個のデータをネットワークに分散させます。
ダウンロードに必要なのは、15個のデータのうち任意の10個だけです。
これによりネットワークの帯域と容量の効率は若干低下しますが、
匿名性は向上し、歯抜けの危険性は低下します。
4. 仮身と実身について
現在、仮身（ファイル情報）と実身（ファイル本体）は完全に独立して管理されています。
そして複数の仮身から一つの実身を参照することが出来ます。
現在の問題点は、仮身と実身の整合性が取りづらいことです。
仮身があるのに実身が存在しなくなった場合や、逆に実身があるのに仮身が無くなった場合は
もう片方を速やかに削除する必要があります。
仮身は実身を参照しているためチェックは容易ですが、実身はどの仮身から参照されているかわからないため
チェックは非常に難しくなっています。
小規模ネットワークでは効率は問題になりませんが、大規模ネットワークになると効率が低下してしまいます。
3.のデータ分散では、実身が分散され、さらに整合性を取るのが難しくなります。
このため、仮身と実身を1対1の対応にしようと考えています。
一つの仮身には一つの実身があり、一つの実身には一つの仮身が対応します。
一つのファイルに対し複数の名前を付けたい場合、複数の仮身・複数の実身を作成しなければいけなくなるため、
効率が低下します（もっとも、どの程度ニーズがあるか不明ですが）。
その分、仮身と実身の整合性は取りやすくなります。
仮身と実身の1対1対応について、ご意見ありましたら教えてください。
5. ボードの改善について
ボードの有効期限の問題、メッセージが行方不明になる問題はなんとか解決したいと思っています。
ギャザーの実装とオープンソース化も、、、いつかは。
色々と書いてみましたが、perfect dark の根底に関わる変更が多く、フルスクラッチで新しく作り直すか、
それとも互換性を維持しつつ改善していくか、現在悩んでいます。
皆さんの意見を聞かせてもらえると助かります。
perfect dark の目標は最初から最後まで、匿名性と効率性を最大限追求し、情報の共有を行うことです。
その目標は現在も変わりはありません。
自分の気持ちにも変わりはありません。
挫けそうになるときもありますが、目標は決してあきらめません。

perfect dark update keeps givig me illegal operation in winxpsp2 and because of it I cannot update. any ideas? I was able to update from 1.01 to 1.02 without an issue
I also had problems updating... today 1.040 was pushed, but PD crashed two times before a sucessful update.

Reading Wikpedia changelog for PD page, it says that 1.040 is ACTUALLY 1.020 (this explains the 1.02 on the changelog); Kaicho just bumped the version number...
Looks like 1.030 had some nasty issues or something more critical... so he decided to roll back to good ol' 1.020. This may also explain the crashes (and why 1.030 had the classic PD icon instead of the new one)
SHIT! PD 1.030 is indeed a unity killer! My 8GB unity is now down to 300MB :( (and in my other box, i lost about 200MB from about 2 GB)
So... stay away from 1.030. If you haven't updated yet from 1.020, good for you. If you still are on 1.030, UPDATE NOW!

Total. The number of search results per tag is limited to 1000.
Enable Autoupdate in your settings, then wait a while and PD will update itself
(you should also have noticed the text "New version detected!" in red letters on PD information tab)
Every time I try to search for 乙女ゲーム on PD, I get ~50 results, which seems an awfully miniscule number, and I'm not running any other searches either. Is PD limiting the number of results, or is that all that exists on the network? What can I do to make my searches more efficient?

I'd say that's all there is. PD isn't so good at every area.
You have to remember PD is always downloading files. Most of these are garbage. The idea is that if you get caught downloading files, you have "plausable deniability." In otherwords you can say I didn't know I was downloading those files, because all the files are encrypted, you don't know what is being downloaded.
So PD is constantly downloading the correct files AND garbage files too. This explaines why you can download a gig and your unity size won't change. This is because as it downloads, it deletes a file.
In Japan broadband is almost all symetrical, meaning that you get the same upload as download speed. In the USA, Canada, Aussie, NZ and Europe (etc) broadband is asymetrical. You usually get 3/1. For example if you download, 1000kbs your line will top out at 333kbs upload.
PD is for people with really fast connections. The Japanese will get on, stay an hour then leave. This makes for very, very slow downloads for people without an equal connection.

You're still on PD1.03? This was a known bastard bug on that version.
Upgrade to 1.04 and it will be all OK.

Hmmm... now that's weird :( I experienced massive unity data losses on 1.03 (and i only ran it for.. 1-2 days?), but after updating to 1.04 all went back to normal, no problems so far until today.
Maybe is some sort of cache cleanup? Or another bizarre bug that only affect one or two users out there...
No idea as of why it's doing it, but it's definitely happening.
But aren't the Unity and the Upload two different things?
If I upload a file, then I get the Unity to go up in size,
so I wonder if the Unity checks to see if the cached uploaded
file has been deleted?

When you upload a new file to the network, PD first copies the file into your unity, then after a while it does upload the file to the network.
After uploading the file, you may delete or archive the original copy if you wish, it's no longer needed since the file is both on your unity, and on the network. Maybe your cache is way too big (beyond 40GB), and PD is performing cleanup? By default PD sets the unity size to 40GB, and if you reach that limit, it starts to kill old stuff in order to make room for new and fresh loot.
If you mess with the unity folder (by deleting stuff by hand, for example)... well, expect problems. (Actually i have done it... and aside of a few dozens of "Perfect Dark has detected unity deletion" message boxes, there seems to be no ill effects... but anyway, DON'T!)
